What You Need
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 oz. red food coloring
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons cocoa
2 1/4 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar
What To Do
1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans, and line with parchment.
2. Cream shortening and sugar, using an electric mixer, until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in eggs one at a time.
4. Separately, make a paste of the food coloring, vanilla and cocoa, then blend into shortening mixture.
5. Gradually mix in flour and buttermilk, alternating each.
6. When the flour is completely mixed in, combine baking soda and vinegar and quickly add to batter.
7. Fill prepared cake pans 2/3 full with batter and bake 25-30 minutes.
